Back in October 2023, AMD reentered the High-End Desktop (HEDT) space with their Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series. But to surprise us further, they release the 9000 series. According to AMD, this line boasts at least a 16% increase in IPC performance across the board, which we'll dive into later in this article.

What's new with the 9000 series?

These new AMD Threadripper PRO chips based on the Zen 5 microarchitecture, codenamed "Shimada Peak", are using TSMC's 4nm N4 process with a 6nm I/O die to accommodate higher frequencies and power efficiency, making it more ideal than ever for demanding workstation and HPC workloads. They still use the same sTR5 sockets as the previous generation and are compatible with the existing WRX90 / TRX50 chipsets on the market. Additionally, Shimada Peak follows their Storm Peak predecessors in offering 128 PCIe Gen 5 lanes as a standard in all their WX series CPUs. A highly desirable set-up for handling multiple GPUs and several NVMe storage devices running simultaneously.

As mentioned earlier, AMD benchmarks these processors of having an IPC uplift in 16% across media and entertainment, design and manufacturing, architecture, engineering, and construction, and software and sciences. Specifically, in AI / ML workstation benchmarks (LLMs, 3D rendering, etc.) they performed upwards of 25%.

Each Threadripper PRO 9000 WX-Series processor includes AMD PRO Technologies, which offers enterprise security and management features.

The premium workstation processor just got an upgrade and is adaptable to any modern business.

How does the 7000 series compare?

The Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series remains a powerful component in delivering high performance and efficiency. Compared to the previous generation “Zen 3,” the 7000 series use Zen 4, which increased IPC performance by 14% and boost and base clock rates that manage an average of 16.9% faster on 5nm silicon process.

Will the 9000 series work with my current motherboard?

If your chipset is either WRX90 or TRX50 then the AMD Ryzen PRO 9000WX Series is compatible, but AMD Ryzen 9000 X only supports TRX50. Check our table below for more information.
